Boksburg, June 29 – In a high-octane Game 6 of the Eastern Storm Veterans Cricket League 2025, CBC Capitals flexed their batting muscle with a mammoth 255-run effort and held off a spirited chase by Sunward Tigers to seal a 39-run win. Anchored by a composed 71 from Attie Scott and a blistering 74 from George Smith, the Capitals posted one of the highest totals of the opening weekend, while Ej Van Niekerk’s explosive 61 off 25 nearly turned the tide for the Tigers.
First Innings – Capitals Build a Towering Total
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, CBC Capitals made full use of favorable batting conditions. Despite the early loss of Ruan Van Tonder, the innings gained momentum through a 148-run stand between skipper Attie Scott and George Smith. Scott played the anchor role, timing his strokes and rotating the strike efficiently for his 71 off 78 balls (8 fours), while Smith counter-attacked at the other end, hammering 74 off just 54 balls with 9 boundaries and 2 sixes.
The Capitals capitalized on erratic bowling from the Tigers, who conceded a staggering 65 wides and 3 no-balls, helping propel the total to 255/6 in 30 overs. Dana Du Preez (2/71) picked up wickets but was costly, while Ej Van Niekerk was the most economical bowler with figures of 1/28 from 5 overs.

Second Innings – Tigers Fire, Falter, and Fight Back
In response, Sunward Tigers had a shaky start, losing opener Marinus Vollenbroek for a duck. A solid rebuilding effort by Riaan Esterhuizen (31 off 27) and Morne Van Eeden (40 off 53) kept hopes alive. But it was Ej Van Niekerk’s explosive arrival at No. 6 that electrified the chase — smashing 61 off just 25 balls including 5 sixes in a stunning late blitz.
However, the run-rate pressure proved too steep. Tight bowling spells from Tom Watson (2/27) and Floors Mynhardt (2/32) slowed the momentum, with Johan Coetsee (2/66) striking twice at crucial moments. Despite the Tigers reaching 216/7, they fell short by 39 runs, unable to replicate the Capitals’ earlier control and consistency.
Key Performances:
• George Smith (CBC Capitals): 74 (54 balls), 9 fours, 2 sixes – explosive middle-order surge
• Ej Van Niekerk (Sunward Tigers): 61 (25 balls), 3 fours, 5 sixes – near-heroic rescue effort
• Attie Scott (CBC Capitals): 71 (78 balls), 8 fours – led from the front with composure
• Tom Watson (CBC Capitals): 6-0-27-2 – disciplined and deadly with the new ball
• Floors Mynhardt (CBC Capitals): 5-0-36-2 – vital breakthroughs in middle overs
